– After breakfast at 8 o'clock I took the mail to Avon, twenty-four miles
south, with the intention of getting the coach on the western road to Buffalo.
In this movement I was disappointed and had to stay all night. In the afternoon
I went to see the celebrated sulphur-springs known by the name of Avon Springs;
seem to partake of magnesium. Many people are here for the benefit of their
health.
Douglas is continuing his long multi-day journey
from the bustling cities of New York and Philadelphia into much less developed
country. His journey is slow and arduous, up first the Hudson, then the Mohawk
valley by stage and boat on the Erie canal. Avon Springs, where we find him
today still exist but have long since passed their heyday.
